It is being used as a substitute for sapphire or tanzanite due to its blue-violet color and its lower price. Iolite has very stong trichroism. In one direction, the stone has a stong dark blue/violet color, from the side it will be grayish/yellow and from a third direction it will be light blue/violet. Iolite and Tanzanite are two of the gemstones that are becoming famous due to the publicity that shop at home networks are bringing them.
